Melitta SOLO E950-101 : Lovely espressos, but not a painless ownership experience.

No nonsense bean to cup machine. Makes some of the best coffee i’ve tasted. Pros- relatively low cost for bean to cup machine (and bought on lightning deal for £230 gbp)- not overly complicated, e. No cappaccino wand (personally i don’t think these work satisfactory on domestic machines)although plastic, feels robust and will last for years- feels like will last longer than four years (which previous £600 machine did – i can’t remember the make). Cons- quite complete to set up initially, you need to follow instructions to the letter, but the english version misses out pressing bean button in after each stage- need to replace filter every two months (200 cups) at £11 a time (although at least machine allows you to keep making coffees till you have replaced)overall, two months in it’s a good buy. However at the price i would expect to last 3-4 years with maintenance of descaling etc. Will update this review if issues. Update after two years – still working fine.

Melitta SOLO E950-101, Bean to Cup Coffee Machine, with Pre-Brew Function, Black/Silver

  • Easy to use. Three brew temperatures, three coffee strengths in any quantity with the flow regulator
  • Height adjustable spout, two cup option, cup warmer, removable water tank, easy to move, only 20 cm wide
  • Hygienic – push-button cleaning, easy-clean components and surfaces. Energy-efficient LED lights, shut down and stand-by modes
  • Box contents: Melitta caffeo solo coffee maker in black, one filter cartridge, one bottle descalent, one water hardness test strip

I have 2 of these bean to cup machines having previously had 3 delonghis which all scaled up after a year despite following recommended descaling procedures. This machine has a built in filter and is easier to clean and descale. If you don’t need a milk frother it is a wonderful coffee maker. Visitors are all impressed and i can’t face any other coffee. Offers different brewing temps. Doesn’t like ‘big’ beans which sometimes block the bean dispenser.

Overall, i am very happy with this machine. This machine makes a very good cup of coffee. As good as any i have had made for me in a domestic environment. It is easy to use and has a few useful settings to adjust the brew to your liking. At this price point, it is fairly good value, particularly when you consider that there isn’t a lot of choice for straight forward, black coffee only, bean to cup machines. The machine is not as small as other reviews might suggest. Whilst it is fairly slim, it is also quite deep and tall. The space saving benefits are minimal i would say.

I bought one in france in 2010. Shown sterling service every day apart from a period where we were in north america for a year when it was unused ( and i missed it dreadfully). Fair play it worked no problems even after that time. Currently into it’s 8th year now and we are thinking of getting another as our one starting to make some grumbling noises. I did have a grinder failure after a year or two, but i took it apart and all that had happened was the grinder had worn out the plastic nubs that held it still and the wires had disconnected, some duct tape later and no problems since. Yes the water container could be bigger and the coffee hopper too, but the device is small in the first place. I clean it regularly and now use 3rd party cleaning tablets and white vinegar for the descale. Get some pipe cleaners or a brush set to clean the gunk out of the mechanism, as coffee grounds are oily and messy. We don’t use milk, so this machine has been perfect for us. We use 1kg bags of lavazza gold for our brews.

Melitta SOLO E950-101, Bean to Cup Coffee Machine, with Pre-Brew Function, Black/Silver : 1st bean to cup machine i have owned. I have thoroughly enjoyed trying different beans and now have some favourite blends. Cleaning and maintenance is a bit of a faff but soon get used to it, keep the instructions safe and handy. Much better than the tassimo i previously used. Happy customer, no problems well priced machine .

Really easy to use, makes great coffee.

Arrived – well packaged – earlier than predictedeasy to set up and operate. Very sleek and compact, as far as bean-to-cup machines go. Typically german – great product with no frills. Lack of a milk frother is a benefit: less cleaning and easily replaced with heating milk in the microwave in a small cafetiere and plunging. (great hint from a previous reviewer.

Everything i’d hoped for, it’s better when you warm the cup first and you have to empty the tray on a regular basis but it’s perfect for the home and with good quality beans it makes great coffee.

I’ve worked my way through four decent coffee machines but the melitta caffeo solo (without the milk frother) is probably the best and easiest to live with. The coffee is also excellent. As i live in a hard water area i’ve got a melitta water softener in the water reservoir. There is a negligible effect on the taste. I’ve noticed some comments about the automated warning(s) that it’s time to either clean or descale the appliance. The cleaning process is pretty straight forward and quick. The descaling process does take about 30 minutes, but you only have to press a couple of buttons and empty a tray. I used melitta cleaning and descaling tablets.

This is my first bean-to-cup after living from tassimo pods for a few years. I finally gave in when i saw this as a lightning deal, but had to return my first order as the machine was leaking water. Having used the replacement for about 5 months now, my feedback is a follows:- it does the job fairly well; to be honest i don’t think there can be too much difference across similar priced machines and the quality depends more on the beans you use- it looks really nice, but is mostly made of plastic- it is a pretty standard machine so don’t expect any frills, e. It doesn’t tell you if there aren’t enough beans left; it will simply make a very mild coffee- the drip tray gets filled quite quickly and the metal grid is prone to scratching- the height adjustable spout is convenient and works really well- the description mentions a cup warmer which i am yet to findi wish i had the privilege of being able to compare this against other bean-to-cup machines, but overall i’m quite happy with my purchase.

No fuss, makes perfect coffee. Only negative is water tank could be bigger. Apart from that would recommend this coffee machine.

Coffee is ok – small cup to ordinary mug. Don’t know what they refer to as cup warmer as non on mine. Hate the fact that the drip tray fills so quickly inside the machine so have to empty before i can make a coffee nearly every time. Wishing i had spent more on a better machine. The first one i ordered came with a cracked water tank and missing the welcome kit – amazon were great at replacing it so 5 stars for them.

I wish i had bought one with a milk warmer but the quality of the coffee is fantastic.

Simple to use and excellent coffee.

I’ve been living with this machine for a few months now, so feel i’ve given it a fair test. I love coffee and have a host of coffee brewing options, but i fancied a bean-to-cup to simplify things a little. I chose the melitta while it was available as a lightning deal and thought it was pretty decent value – german engineering, handsome, compact and with all the features i wanted in a machine. On the whole, i really enjoy the coffee it brews – it is consistently great espresso. However, it is not without its frustrations. Although melitta provides a thick, multi-language owners manual, the instructions are not well written and incomplete. The most obvious omission appears when you need to clean the device and the instructions refer to a diagram that isn’t in the manual. It’s important, too because it tells you where you need to place the cleaning tablet. (*** update: thanks to honest opinion for his/her comment below – it appears there is a diagram in the book – on the inside back cover.

Unbelievably simple to set up and use. Choosing size of cup and coffee strength is a simple twist of a dial and press of a button. Very easy to empty excess water tray and used coffee grinds.

Drinking far too much coffee just can’t get enough of it looks stylish and makes a fine cup of coffee.

Absolutely love my coffee machine. Used it daily for over two years now and it’s never missed a beat. Two years and 8 days after getting one of the buttons became temperamental, so i took a punt and emailed melitta explaining i was 8 days outside the warranty but could they do anything. Got a reply stating they’d fix it free of charge. They arranged collection on wednesday (supplying packaging), fixed it on thursday and had it back to me by the following day. Absolutely amazed by the speed of this. Good as new when returned to me with all buttons replaced with new ones. So for the machine itself and the customer services, it’s five stars from me all the way.

Everyone that visits loves our coffee. I invested in one of these bean-cup machines because making a cup of coffee from freshly ground beans really makes a difference – especially when you drink espresso. We use this every single day. I clean it when it reminds me and wipe it down when required. We purchase good beans and treat the machine well and so far it treats us as well. Unlike some other reviews i also want to confirm that a full cleaning cycle ensure you clean and descale the water tank and pipes and the dry grinder and mill. I would highly recommend to maintain both the machine and quality of the coffee that you perform both when the indicator tells you.

Really simple to use and makes great coffee. It’s a little loud, but that is to be expected with the grinder.

So happy with it after nearly a year. I weened the so off of her nespresso with this – she needed a bean-to-cup machine for ease-of-use, and i wanted something that makes a great cup with whatever beans i want to throw in it. Requires some very light maintenance every couple of months (several minutes of taking it through the cleaning steps at home). Daily cleaning is literally one minute for 4 cups made.

    1. 1.0 out of 5 stars mine is noisy
I bought a mellita ‘bean to cup’ coffee maker. It is now 4 months old and i feel it has become increasingly noisy – with a rattle developing. It has been back for repair twice and there is no improvement, if anything i think it is worse after the last repair. The customer service advice is that they will not do anything more and say ‘you could place a mat under the machine to stop any vibration on your surface’this appears to me to be an acknowledgment that they know it rattles and that is the best they can offer. It makes great coffee but i really can not recommend this maker based on the customer service i have received.

  4. 3.0 out of 5 stars Machine typically breaks at 2 yrs

This review is from : Melitta SOLO E950-101, Bean to Cup Coffee Machine, with Pre-Brew Function, Black/Silver

I have bought 2 of these machines from amazon (germany as cheaper at the time to buy there and have delivered to uk). I am so annoyed as the machine makes a great coffee but both machines have broken just after the 30 month mark and repairing in uk is too expensive as nearly the cost of the machine. It’s something to do with the pump valve. I clean clean clean and even put in a new brewing unit but the issue is a manufacturing fault which continues across the solo models. I would expect 4-5 yrs at least from a german bean to cup machine. I wonder if it’s deliberate like light bulbs made to burn out after a certain amount of time. Well it’s no longer an option for me to buy a third machine – it’s an environmental issue too – just more landfill.

      1. 1.0 out of 5 stars Didnt Work out of the Box
I assumed all of the bad reviews for the melitta solo were from unlucky chumps and i decided to take a chance and buy. Unfortunately, upon first turning on the machine the power and clean lights flashed and no action could change the state. Manual & melitta website were not helpful.

    1. 2.0 out of 5 stars Started well. Then started leaking
This is a small bean to cup machine. If you drink lots of coffee you might get frustrated with how often you have to empty the grounds (etc). That said the machine makes good coffee. After 18 months the machine started leaking from underneath the water container. Melitta customer services didn’t want to know (despite my best efforts). Its a design flaw, over time the seals around the water connection degrade and leak. Good coffee, flawed design, really poor customer service.

I bought this a christmas present for my brother (a bit extravagant) as he always buys me expensive gifts and i’m like here look at these socks i bought you. . He’s always drinking coffee at mine as i have a bean to cup so i decided to treat him to a machine he loves it, i have no idea how he sleeps with the the amount of coffee he’s drank since he’s opened it, needless to say he was well pleased with it.

It makes a great cup of coffee and a decent espresso. I get marginally better results from my semi automatic gaggia classic but who has time for that at 6am?requires frequent emptying and refilling but that’s much less hassle than tamping etc. At least 4 cups a day for 3 years and not a whimper.

Like others, started off well then gradually went down hill. Stopped grinding properly, went off for repair (within warranty period) – good on them they loaned me another machine, glad they did. The machine came back from being “repaired” and it looked scruffy, coffee all over, didn’t look good. They collected it again after an internal investigation as to what had happened. Machine came back again, now it leaks out of the bottom side – which it has never done. Coffee doesn’t taste like it used to, so no idea what has been done nowbest part, they claim that as they repaired previously out of warranty, as a goodwill gesture, they will not repair this for free, as the fault has developed when in my possession. Not sure how they can state this. They are also refusing to acknowledge that the repair was reported within my warranty period. I have proof in emails, so i am confident on my side, they seem to be assuming/guessing. Seemed amazing at first, turned very bitter in the end.

      1. 5.0 out of 5 stars if you have milk foamers or the like you need to be prepared to clean the machine ...
The price range of b-to-c machines is so vast it is hard to know which to go for. Needed a second machine after having owned a delonghi one for a long time. Realised that i had no need for the milk foamer. Plus if you’ve not owned a b-to-c machine before, if you have milk foamers or the like you need to be prepared to clean the machine regularly. In contrast, without the foamer it makes for a low maintenance proposition. (tip – if you want foamed milk, consider buying a stand alone piece of kit (eg. Nespresso airo-thingy) rather than mess around with an integrated mechanism. Cheaper, easier to clean, plus allows you to hide the foamer away when not using)bearing in mind my the preferences above, this machine in particular is ideal. Makes lovely expressos (which i convert to americanos with water from the kettle). Easy to drain used water and coffee grounds. And, really well priced compared to similar machines on the market.

It is a very attractive machine with a narrow footprint, it also feels very well made and makes excellent coffee. The downsides are:- a very small water tank, a very small bean hopper, which clogs and the beans need a poke to get them moving again occasionall,. On the one i bought the light would come on to indicate that the drip tray/used coffee receptacle were full, which they weren’t (about every second cup),and the descaling light would illuminate even immediately after the descaling process had been carried out. I returned mine and got my delonghi esam 4200 repaired.

When we first got this machine we loved it so much we got my parents one as well. But just outside two years both have gone gone. To be fair our one got blocked up inside with oil and grinds, easyish to remove back and side panel to clean but one you take the mill apart you can not get it to grind properly once back togeather (it was blocked up inside the mill – cleaning programs don’t do anything with that just the wet parts) my parents one started leaking on the none removalable panel side. Hopefully i’ll be able to recycle the mill out of the leaking one to get one working machine. But i was hoping for 4 to 5 years out of a £350 machine.
